Is it your First Outrigger Canoe Race? Make sure to bring these items.

Photo by Cody Silvester The Southern California Outrigger Racing Association ( SCORA ), will be having its first outrigger canoe race of the year on May 12, 2018, in San Diego, CA. From previous years, I have noticed that canoe clubs from across the nation come out to the Crystal Pier Outrigger Canoe race in San Diego, CA. to compete against each other and set their team on the map as the fastest. The races can get intense and violent. There is a lot of pressure and fear among paddlers. However, there is a total relief once you pass the finish line. Your first race will always be one to remember. But what makes a perfect and comfortable race? Having the most important items with you on race day. 1. Sunscreen : The race is held at a beach and under a hot bright sun. The Southern California Outrigger Racing Association ( SCORA ) has become popular, since the introduction of the outrigger canoe at the Rio Olympics games of 2016. This weekend, I attended my first outrigger canoe practice after a six-month break. I noticed a vast amount of new paddlers; I can usually tell by the way they either: Hold a paddle, what size of a paddle they use, and their paddling technique. It is not my job to coach novices; however, I can educate them by sharing three useful tips to become a better outrigger paddler. 1. The Season We Want and Fear is Upon Us

The season we fear and the season we await is upon us. The Southern California Outrigger Racing Association  (SCORA)  season is just around the corner and I must admit, I am not ready for it. A fresh new season brings in new novices, new paddling techniques, new canoes and new stories. On the other hand, what is not new, is the back-pain you get after the first practice. I am positive that I eventually encounter the pain. I am ready for it because, I know how it feel and how to overcome it. However, not sure if the new novices will.  I’ll just to wait till the next practice if they show up. The first day of practice can be cruel. If you attend, don’t come in a wetsuit, you will definitely be given a silly nickname. Do not come wearing a bright green or yellow shirt; again, you will be given a silly nickname. If you do anything wrong after being given the rules, trust in me, you will be given a silly nickname.
